  • Historical Sites

    Old Mission San Juan Bautista
    Mission San Juan Bautista was founded on June 24, 1797 by Fermín Lasuén of the Franciscan order, the mission was the fifteenth and largest of the Spanish missions established in present-day California. Named for Saint John the Baptist, the mission is the namesake of the city of San Juan Bautista. Barracks for the soldiers, a nunnery, the Jose Castro House, and other buildings were constructed around a large grassy plaza in front of the church and can be seen today in their original form.

    San Juan Bautista State Historic Park
    The San Juan Bautista State Historical Park sponsors an Early Days Celebration each year which is always held in June on Father's Day weekend. The park also celebrates the First Saturday each month as Living History with activities conducted by docents which includes spinning, candle making, dancing, loom weaving and much more.

  • Parks and Recreation

    Pinnacles National Monument
    The Pinnacles National Park has plenty of caves, trails, rock climbing areas, wildflowers and rare birds of prey. Learn more

    Fremont Peak and Observatory
    This park features expansive views of Monterey Bay, from its hiking trails in the grasslands of the higher peaks of the Gavilan Range. Other views include the San Benito Valley, Salinas Valley, and the Santa Lucia Mountains east of Big Sur. Pine and oak woodlands in the park are home to many birds and mammals. There are camping and picnic facilities in the park. The park also features an astronomical observatory with a 30-inch telescope, which is open for public programs on selected evenings.

    Hollister Hills Vehicular Recreation Area
    Off-road vehicle recreation area on 3,300 acres has 128 miles of trails and several hill climbs. There are also two picnic areas, a practice Motocross Track, an ATV Track for three and four wheeled vehicles, a TT track, a mini-bike trail, and a mini-track.

    DeAnza Trail
    This is an excellent biking, hiking and horseback riding trail that takes the adventurer into incredibly beautiful ecosystems throughout the trail
